What to Wear to My Adult Dance Class: A Guide for Comfort and Confidence

After years of teaching adults in the dance studio, I’ve learned that one of the most common concerns is what to wear. Many adult students feel uncertain about walking into the studio for the first time, unsure of what’s appropriate or comfortable. As a teacher, I always wanted my students to feel at ease—because when you’re comfortable, you can focus on what really matters: the joy of dance!

Now that I’m also an adult student who enjoys taking open classes, I truly understand how important it is to feel good in what you’re wearing. Let’s be real—most of us aren’t squeezing into those tiny leotards and pink tights from when we were 15 anymore! It’s all about finding the right balance between comfort, support, and looking great.

This guide will give you a practical approach to what you should wear to your adult dance class, so you can feel confident and comfortable as you move.

Why What You Wear Matters in Adult Dance Classes

As adults, we’ve moved beyond the phase of trying to conform to a strict dress code. It’s about comfort, confidence, and making sure that what you’re wearing allows you to move freely. For me, being in an environment where I felt comfortable helped me fall in love with dance all over again, as both a teacher and student. When you’re comfortable with what you wear to your adult dance class, it allows you to focus on perfecting your form and enjoying the experience.

Your dance attire not only affects how you feel but also impacts how your instructor can help you improve. Choosing clothes that fit well (but aren’t too tight) is key. It allows your teacher to see your alignment and posture, which is crucial for correcting technique. At the same time, your outfit should provide enough flexibility for full-body movement.

Recommended Attire for Adult Dance Classes

Here’s a breakdown of what I’ve found to be the best options for adult dance students, both from my years of teaching and personal experience as a student myself.

Leotards or Fitted Tops

While traditional leotards are an option, most adult dancers prefer a fitted top or tank that’s more aligned with modern athletic wear. Yoga tops, athletic tanks, or form-fitting t-shirts work well. The key is to choose something that hugs your body so your teacher can easily see your form but is still comfortable enough to allow you to move freely. If you’re new to ballet, a fitted top will give you the structure you need without feeling too constricted.

Leggings or Yoga Pants

Leggings or yoga pants are by far the most popular option for adult dance students, including myself! These offer flexibility and comfort while still giving a clean line that allows your instructor to see your alignment. Opt for high-waisted leggings for extra support around the waist. Whether you’re doing ballet, modern, or jazz, leggings are a great option.

Pro Tip: Choose leggings that are moisture-wicking to stay dry during class. You’ll appreciate it after a few minutes at the barre!

Ballet Slippers or Dance Shoes

When it comes to ballet or contemporary dance, proper footwear is essential. Ballet slippers are a must for ballet class. You’ll need to decide between leather and canvas slippers. Personally, I recommend leather ballet shoes because they help strengthen your feet over time. You can read more about the pros and cons in my article: Leather vs. Canvas Ballet Shoes: Why Leather Shoes Are Better for Strengthening Your Feet.

For other dance styles, like jazz or modern, flexible dance shoes, socks, or barefoot options may be appropriate. Always check with your instructor to confirm what’s best for the style of class you’re taking.

Sports Bras for Extra Support

One thing I’ve found, both as a teacher and a student, is the importance of wearing a supportive sports bra. As adults, our bodies need a little more support than they did in our teens, and having the right sports bra can make all the difference during jumps, turns, and more intense combinations. Look for a high-support sports bra that fits comfortably under your top, especially if you’re doing a more high-energy class.

Warm-Up Layers

Especially in colder months, you’ll want to layer up when you first get to class. A fitted jacket, sweater, or leg warmers can help keep your muscles warm before you start dancing. These can be easily removed once your body is warmed up, but having them on hand can help prevent injury and keep you feeling comfortable.

What to Wear Based on Dance Style

Depending on the type of dance class you’re taking, your attire may change slightly. Here’s a breakdown of what to wear for different dance styles in your adult dance class.

Ballet

For ballet, a more traditional look is often encouraged. A fitted leotard or tank top paired with ballet tights or leggings is the norm. Ballet slippers are a must, and hair should be pulled back in a bun or ponytail to keep it out of your face. If you’re just getting back into ballet, don’t worry—there’s no need to squeeze into a tiny leotard and tights. Leggings or yoga pants work just as well, especially if you’re focused on comfort.

Jazz

Jazz classes are all about energy and dynamic movement, so you want something that allows flexibility. A fitted top, sports bra, and leggings or yoga pants are great options. Jazz shoes or dance sneakers are often recommended, but check with your instructor to see what’s required.

Modern/Contemporary

In modern and contemporary dance, the focus is often on expression and fluidity. A comfortable top or leotard paired with leggings is the perfect attire. Many modern classes are done barefoot, so check with your teacher to see what’s required. As always, a sports bra is a good idea for added support during dynamic movements.

Hip-Hop

Hip-hop classes offer the most flexibility when it comes to attire. Loose-fitting joggers or leggings paired with a comfortable t-shirt or tank top work great. For footwear, opt for dance sneakers or supportive athletic shoes. Hip-hop is all about comfort and personal style, so this is your chance to express yourself!

Tap

For tap class, comfort is key, but your footwear is the most important aspect. Tap shoes with a good fit are essential. You’ll want to wear something flexible like leggings or yoga pants that allow you to move freely, and a fitted top so your teacher can see your posture. Tap class tends to involve a lot of energy, so make sure you feel supported and comfortable in whatever you choose.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to deciding what to wear to my adult dance class, the key is to find something that feels good on your body while allowing you the flexibility to move. After years of teaching adults, I always tell my students that it’s more important to be comfortable and confident than to worry about traditional dance attire. I also understand that as adults, we want to make sure we feel supported in what we wear—whether that’s through a quality sports bra or a pair of leggings that won’t restrict movement.
