Why Dancer Mental Health Is So Important

Why Dancer Mental Health Is So Important

As dancers, we often push ourselves to the limit—striving for technical perfection, battling physical exhaustion, and navigating the emotional rollercoaster of performance and rejection. While dance can be a deeply fulfilling art form, it also takes a significant toll on mental health.

Looking back on my career as a professional dancer, I realize how much I undervalued my mental health while performing. I wish I had prioritized self-care and sought the support I needed. Today, I want to share why dancer mental health is so important, not only for sustaining a career in dance but for thriving as a human being.

Understanding the Mental Health Challenges in Dance

Dance is physically demanding, but its emotional and psychological demands are often overlooked. According to a study published in Frontiers in Psychology, dancers face higher rates of anxiety, depression, and eating disorders compared to the general population (source).

In my own experience, the relentless pursuit of perfection often left me feeling inadequate. Rehearsals ran late, competitions were fierce, and the pressure to maintain an ideal body type was constant. Like many dancers, I internalized the belief that my worth was tied to my performance, which led to burnout and self-doubt.

The Toll of Perfectionism on Dancers

Perfectionism is a double-edged sword in dance. While it drives us to master technique and artistry, it can also lead to mental health struggles. A 2023 article on the Mental Health Missions website highlights how perfectionism in dance often results in chronic stress, self-criticism, and a fear of failure (source).

As a dancer, I felt trapped by the need to excel in every aspect of my craft. Ballet, in particular, comes with rigid aesthetic and technical standards, making it easy to feel like you’re never enough. Studies show that these pressures can contribute to severe mental health issues, including disordered eating and anxiety (source).

Steps Dancers Can Take to Prioritize Mental Health

Taking care of your mental health is just as important as perfecting your technique. Here are some strategies I wish I had embraced during my performing career:

1. Recognize the Signs of Burnout

It’s okay to take a step back when you feel overwhelmed. Pay attention to signs of stress, fatigue, or loss of motivation, and allow yourself time to rest.

2. Seek Professional Help

Therapists and counselors who specialize in performing arts can provide tools to navigate the unique challenges dancers face. There’s no shame in seeking help—it’s a sign of strength.

3. Build a Support System

Surround yourself with people who encourage you both in and outside the studio. Whether it’s friends, family, or mentors, having a strong support system is invaluable.

4. Practice Self-Compassion

Embrace the idea that it’s okay to make mistakes. Growth comes from learning, not perfection. Positive affirmations can help shift your mindset. Check out Affirmations for Dancers: The Power of Positive Thinking for inspiration.

5. Incorporate Mental Health Education into Dance Training

Dance educators can play a significant role in normalizing conversations about mental health. If you’re a teacher, consider sharing articles like Dear Dancer: A Letter from Your Dance Teacher or providing resources during class.

Why Dancer Mental Health Matters

Reflecting on my journey, I wish I had understood the importance of prioritizing mental health earlier. Dance is an art form rooted in expression, and to express authentically, dancers must feel whole—mind, body, and soul.

Let’s change the narrative and create a healthier, more supportive environment for dancers everywhere. Together, we can foster resilience, creativity, and joy in the art we love.
