The Best Dance Teacher Outfits

As a dance teacher working in both public schools and private studios, I am constantly on the lookout for the best dance teacher outfits. With the new school year approaching, it’s the perfect time to refresh your teaching wardrobe. Keep whatever is still in good condition, and throw out or donate items that no longer serve you.

Comfort and breathability are key when choosing your dance teacher outfits. You need something you can move in freely, but it’s equally important that your attire remains modest and professional, ensuring it won’t cause any distractions while teaching. By finding the right balance, you can create a functional and stylish wardrobe that keeps you feeling confident and ready to inspire your students.

Essentials for Every Dance Teacher’s Wardrobe

1. Comfortable Tops and Tanks
Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or moisture-wicking materials to keep you cool during intense classes. Look for tops with a modest neckline and appropriate coverage to maintain professionalism. Layering pieces such as fitted tanks under loose, flowy tops can also be a great option for added comfort and style.

In the school system I either opt for a professional breathable top like this from amazon, you can also find great ones on sale at Old Navy. Or a school pride T shirt.

2. Versatile Bottoms
Leggings are a staple in any dance teacher’s wardrobe. Choose high-quality, durable leggings that offer support and flexibility. High-waisted options can provide extra comfort and coverage. Additionally, consider investing in dance pants or joggers for a relaxed yet professional look.

Personally, my favorite and go-to pants are joggers. Joggers are an excellent addition to dance teacher outfits, offering both comfort and style. Unlike traditional sweatpants, joggers are designed with a more tailored fit, providing a sleek and professional appearance while maintaining the flexibility needed for dance instruction. Made from breathable, stretchy fabrics, joggers allow for a full range of motion, making them ideal for demonstrating movements and engaging in warm-up exercises. They also often feature convenient pockets for small essentials, adding practicality to their list of benefits. Whether paired with a fitted tank or a cozy hoodie, joggers can seamlessly transition from the studio to casual errands, making them a versatile and essential piece in any dance teacher’s wardrobe. My personal favorite are the studio pant from Lululemon, which can be a bit on the pricey side. However, you can find great dupes on amazon that offer similar comfort and style at a more affordable price.

3. Supportive Footwear
While most dance teachers prefer to teach in dance shoes or barefoot, having a reliable pair of supportive sneakers for warm-ups or traveling between classes is essential. Look for shoes with good arch support and cushioning to keep your feet comfortable throughout the day.

Whether I am in the studio or the school I usually opt to teach in a jazz sneaker which offers lots of support of long hours of teaching/ standing on my feet. Check out these jazz sneakers or for a more economical option check these out

4. Layering Pieces
Cardigans, hoodies, and lightweight jackets are perfect for layering over your dance outfits. They provide warmth during cooler weather and can be easily removed once you start to warm up. Choose pieces that are easy to move in and complement your dance teacher outfits.

5. Professional Accessories
Accessories can enhance your overall look and add a touch of professionalism. Consider adding a few essential items to your dance teacher outfits, such as a stylish watch, minimalistic jewelry, or a hair accessory to keep your hair neat and tidy.

Tips for Maintaining Your Dance Teacher Outfits

1. Regular Washing and Care
To extend the life of your dance teacher outfits, follow the care instructions on each garment. Wash them regularly and avoid using harsh detergents or bleach. Air-drying your clothes can also help maintain their shape and prevent shrinking.

2. Organize Your Wardrobe
Keep your dance teacher outfits organized and easily accessible. Use hangers for tops and dresses, and fold leggings and pants neatly. Having a dedicated space for your dance attire will make it easier to find what you need and keep everything in good condition.

This is a hard one for me especially as we get further into the season.

3. Rotate Your Outfits
Avoid wearing the same outfits repeatedly by rotating your dance teacher outfits. This will help distribute wear and tear evenly and give your clothes time to rest between uses. Having a variety of options will also keep your wardrobe fresh and exciting.

Where to Shop for Dance Teacher Outfits

1. Specialized Dancewear Stores
Many dancewear stores offer a wide range of options specifically designed for dance teachers. Brands like Bloch, Capezio, and Motionwear provide high-quality, durable pieces that are perfect for teaching.

2. Online Retailers
Websites like Amazon, Lululemon, and Athleta offer a variety of dance teacher outfits that are both stylish and functional. Look for reviews and recommendations to find the best options for your needs.

Be sure to check out their discount programs for teachers instructors in certain industries. For Lululemon its the Sweat Collective Program read more about it here, it gives you 25% off Lululemon products. Athleta has a program as well, although I do believe its on hold as of 2024, but you can check out some details about it here.

3. Local Boutiques
Don’t overlook local boutiques and stores. They often carry unique pieces that can add a special touch to your dance teacher outfits. Supporting local businesses is also a great way to find one-of-a-kind items.
