Morning Routine for Dance Teachers: Finding Balance as a Mom, Teacher, and Arts Administrator

Balancing the life of a dance educator, arts administrator, and mom of two can feel like a never-ending juggling act. With the constant pull of responsibilities, creating a structured morning routine has been my saving grace. In this article, I’ll share my personal morning routine, the habits that keep me grounded, and tips for other dance teachers and moms striving for balance.

Why Morning Routines Matter for Dance Teachers

As dance teachers and arts administrators, our days are filled with movement, creativity, and managing the demands of students, coworkers, and family. A morning routine sets the tone for the day, providing a sense of control and clarity. For me, it’s also a time to connect with myself and my faith before the whirlwind begins.

My Morning Routine as a Dance Teacher and Mom

5:00-5:30 AM: Wake-Up Call

I aim to wake up between 5:00 and 5:30 AM, but let’s be honest—snooze is my best friend some mornings. My wake-up time often depends on my son’s nursing schedule since he usually needs a feeding between 4:00 and 5:00 AM.

5:30-6:00 AM: Quick Workout

Staying physically active is non-negotiable in my line of work. A short workout helps me shake off the grogginess and energizes me for the day ahead. Whether it’s a quick yoga flow or some light cardio, this time is for me to reconnect with my body.

6:00-6:30 AM: Prayer and Quiet Time

This is the most sacred part of my morning. I carve out this space for prayer, Bible study, and quiet reflection with God. As a mom and teacher, it’s often the only uninterrupted time I get in my day. This practice grounds me, reminding me to count my blessings and stay grateful.

6:30-7:00 AM: Breakfast and Lunch Prep

Next, I prepare lunch for my daughter and myself while cooking a quick breakfast for myself and my husband. Keeping things simple helps, especially on busy teaching days or when extracurricular activities are on the schedule.

7:00-7:30 AM: Getting Ready

This is when I get my daughter dressed and do her hair—a task that has become one of our bonding moments each morning. It’s a small but important ritual that helps her start her day feeling cared for and confident.

7:30-8:15 AM: School Drop-Off

If I’m taking my daughter to school, we’re out the door by 7:30 AM. Otherwise, I sip coffee and catch up on the news for a few peaceful moments before my workday begins.

8:15-9:45 AM: Prep Time at Home

After the school drop-off, I head back home to get dressed, pack bags, and take care of any last-minute tasks. Feeding or pumping for my son is also part of this time.

9:45-10:30 AM: Commute to Work

This is my transition into my arts administrator role. During the drive, I often listen to inspiring podcasts or reflect on the day’s tasks.

Navigating the Rest of the Day

My afternoons vary depending on the day. Mondays and Wednesdays are packed with teaching dance classes at the studio from 5:00 to 9:00 PM. On other days, I pick up my daughter from school, manage extracurricular activities like swim lessons, or head home for family time.

Dinner is usually a crockpot meal or something simple—check out 10 Easy Dance Night Recipes for my go-to ideas. Fridays are my favorite: we enjoy family movie nights with frozen pizza, popcorn, and laughter.

Tips for Building a Morning Routine

  • Start Small: Establishing a new routine can feel overwhelming. Start with one or two changes, such as waking up earlier or incorporating quiet time.
  • Prioritize Self-Care: Dance teachers often give so much to others. Use your morning to invest in yourself, whether through exercise, meditation, or journaling.
  • Stay Flexible: Life as a mom and educator can be unpredictable. Build a routine that allows room for adjustments.
