Thank a Dance Teacher Day: Celebrate the Heart Behind the Art on May 1st
As a dance teacher myself, I know how much of this work is done behind the scenes, often with little recognition. We show up early to warm up the studio and stay late to talk to students after class. We hold space for joy, frustration, breakthroughs, and tears. And while our students may not always say it out loud, we know the work we do matters.
That’s why Thank a Dance Teacher Day, celebrated annually in May, holds such a special place in my heart. It’s a beautiful reminder that the hours we spend teaching, choreographing, and mentoring do not go unnoticed. Whether you’re a parent, student, studio owner, or fellow educator, this is the perfect opportunity to say, “Thank you.”
What Is Thank a Dance Teacher Day?
#ThankADanceTeacherDay is a global movement that shines a well-deserved spotlight on dance education and the teachers who make it possible. The initiative was launched in 2014 by the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) to raise awareness about the value of dance in education and to encourage communities to publicly thank the educators behind it.
At its core, this day celebrates the lasting impact dance teachers have on their students. Through consistent guidance and support, we help students grow not just in their technique, but in their confidence, creativity, and character. As the saying goes:
“Behind every dancer who believes in themselves, is a dance teacher who believed in them first.”
That belief is powerful, and it can change a young person’s life.

Why Dance Education Matters
A quality dance education is about so much more than perfecting pirouettes or nailing the choreography. Dance is a tool for self-expression, discipline, resilience, and community building. It offers a wide range of benefits:
- Physical: Builds strength, flexibility, coordination, and body awareness
- Social: Encourages teamwork, communication, and empathy
- Emotional: Provides a safe outlet for stress and self-expression
- Cognitive: Improves memory, pattern recognition, and problem-solving
- Psychological: Builds confidence, persistence, and self-worth
When we celebrate dance teachers, we’re also celebrating these lifelong lessons that shape students far beyond the studio.
How to Celebrate Thank a Dance Teacher Day
You don’t have to go all out to make a dance teacher feel appreciated. Even small gestures can go a long way. Here are a few thoughtful ways to say “thank you” on May 1st:
1. Write a Personal Note or Handmade Card
A heartfelt message from a student or parent can mean more than any gift. Share a specific moment when the teacher made an impact or simply let them know how their guidance has shaped your journey.
2. Share on Social Media
Post a photo or video of your favorite dance memory and tag your teacher with the hashtag #ThankADanceTeacherDay. This helps spread awareness while also letting your teacher know they’ve made a difference.
3. Give a Small Gift (With a Personal Touch)
If you’d like to add a little something extra, gift cards for coffee shops like Starbucks are always a hit with dance teachers. And if you want to make it feel more personal, check out this themed printable:

4. Feature Them in a Blog Post or Newsletter
Studio owners and dance bloggers, this is a great time to highlight your team. Share a spotlight article about a teacher’s background, favorite teaching moment, or classroom philosophy.
From My Own Experience: Why This Day Matters
As a dance educator, I’ve seen it all; torn tights, forgotten steps, breakthrough moments, and emotional wins. I’ve worked with students from all backgrounds, many of whom walk into the studio carrying far more than just a dance bag. I try to give each dancer the encouragement and structure they need to feel seen, heard, and capable.
I’ve also created free online resources to help fellow educators and families who may not have access to formal training.
Moments like these remind me why this work is so meaningful and why Thank a Dance Teacher Day is so needed.
Keep the Support Going Year-Round
May 1st is a beautiful day to say thank you, but support doesn’t have to stop there. Dance teachers face challenges that often go unseen, burnout, long hours, and the emotional weight of mentoring young people.

A Final Note of Gratitude
If you’ve ever been moved by a performance, built confidence through class, or found a second home in a studio, thank your teacher. A moment of appreciation goes further than you think.
Thank a Dance Teacher Day isn’t about big celebrations or expensive gifts. It’s about recognizing the people who work day after day to lift others up through the art of dance.
So on May 1st, take a moment to say “thank you.”
Send a note. Post a photo. Tag them. Share your story.
Because behind every dancer who shines is a teacher who helped them get there.
Happy Dancing!
