Did you know that April 29th is International Day of Dance

Every year in April, dancers and dance lovers around the world come together to celebrate International Day of Dance. This global celebration, established in 1982 by the International Dance Committee of the UNESCO International Theatre Institute, shines a spotlight on the art of dance, its power, its presence, and its purpose in every corner of the world.

For me, International Day of Dance is more than just a calendar event. It’s a reminder of where this journey started and why I continue to advocate for dance education, one step at a time.

What Is International Day of Dance?

International Day of Dance was created to bring attention to dance as a universal art form. The date, April 29, honors the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, a French dancer and ballet master who is considered the father of modern ballet. On this day, professional and amateur dancers alike celebrate the transformative power of movement.

From ballet studios in Paris to dance classrooms in Atlanta, dance transcends language, background, and borders. Whether it’s a toddler in their first creative movement class or a professional company performing on an international stage, dance has the unique ability to connect us to each other and ourselves.

A Personal Story: The Dance That Changed Everything

I still remember the first time I walked into a real dance studio. I was nervous, unsure of my place, and intimidated by the mirrors that seemed to reflect every imperfection. But the moment the music started and my feet moved across the floor, something clicked. I found freedom. I found focus. I found my voice, even though no words were spoken.

That early connection to dance shaped everything that came after. It led me to a degree in dance education, to teaching in public schools and private studios, and to founding this platform, My Ordered Steps, where I advocate for accessible, high-quality dance education for all.

Now, every year in April, I take a moment to reflect on that journey and think about all the young dancers who are just beginning theirs.

Why We Need to Celebrate

Dance isn’t just an extracurricular, it’s a language of learning. It teaches discipline, creativity, teamwork, and emotional expression. And yet, dance programs across the country are still fighting for visibility and funding, especially in schools.

That’s why International Day of Dance matters. It’s not just a day to celebrate movement, it’s a day to champion the role of dance in education and culture. And it’s a perfect time to learn more about what it takes to bring dance into more communities.

How You Can Celebrate International Day of Dance

Whether you’re a dancer, a parent, a teacher, or just someone who loves music and movement, here are a few ways to celebrate:

  • Take a dance class (even virtually)
  • Watch a performance from a style you’ve never seen before
  • Share your dance story on social media
  • Advocate for dance programs in your local schools
  • Support a local dance organization or nonprofit

Even something as simple as dancing in your living room with your kids can be a joyful, intentional way to participate.

Final Thoughts

International Day of Dance is a global celebration, but for me, it’s also deeply personal. It’s a reminder of how far I’ve come, and how many more dancers still need access, opportunity, and encouragement.

Let’s keep moving. Let’s keep educating. Let’s keep dancing.

Happy International Day of Dance!

Happy Dancing!
