Celebrate National Dance Day with Joy and Movement!

Every year, National Dance Day celebrations provide exciting opportunities to embrace the art of movement. This event is about more than just dancing—it’s about recognizing the joy, health benefits, and sense of community that dance brings to people of all ages. Whether you’re a professional dancer or just love moving to the rhythm, this day is for you!

National Dance Day was established by Nigel Lythgoe and the American Dance Movementin partnership with Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, who introduced a resolution recognizing dance as a valuable form of exercise and of artistic expression in 2010 to promote the physical and mental benefits of dance. It takes place every year on the third Saturday of September, uniting people worldwide in celebration of all forms of dance. You can learn more about this celebration at the American Dance Movement’s official website.

Why Dance Matters

Dance is an incredible form of self-expression that brings joy and wellness. National Dance Day dance celebrations emphasize that anyone, regardless of skill level, can participate in this art form. Dance improves mental health, builds strength, and enhances flexibility, all while allowing us to express creativity.

One of the highlights of the event is learning the National Dance Day routine! You can join in by following this link and learning the routine wherever you are. For an extra dose of inspiration, check out this thrilling performance of a National Dance Day Flash Mob:

Dance and Education

As a dance educator, National Dance Day reminds me of the incredible value of dance in education. Not only does it encourage creativity, but it also fosters collaboration and cultural understanding. Incorporating dance into the classroom helps students develop essential life skills and an appreciation for the arts. This connects beautifully with my reflections from National Arts in Education Week. If you’d like to explore more about the role of dance in schools, check out my post on National Arts in Education Week.

Honoring Hispanic Heritage Through Dance

September also marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, and what better way to celebrate than through dance? Many of the world’s most popular dance styles, including salsa, merengue, and bachata, have their roots in Hispanic culture. Dance not only teaches cultural appreciation but also honors the rich traditions of Hispanic communities. Be sure to read my posts on Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month Through Dance and Famous Hispanic Dancers and Choreographers for more insight.
