10 College Dance Programs You Should Know About
My college experience was pivotal in shaping the career I have today. I graduated from the University of South Carolina, and I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything. During my time there, I had the opportunity to perform some incredible choreography, including George Balanchine’s Stars and Stripes, Twyla Tharp’s Deuce Coupe, and Lila York’s Celts. It’s where I built my foundation, ignited my passion for teaching, and formed lifelong connections with my cohort, many of whom I still keep in touch with today. My time at USC also led to my first professional gig and made me the dancer and teacher I am.
With so many dance programs available, it can be overwhelming to choose the right one. This list is based on my personal opinion of schools you should consider. It’s an inclusive list featuring schools from the SEC, HBCUs, performing arts schools, and institutions offering both BA,BFA, and Masters programs. Whether you’re looking for a classical training environment or a more contemporary approach, these programs offer a range of opportunities to help you grow as a dancer.
1. University of South Carolina
As a proud alum, I have to start with the University of South Carolina. Their dance program offers both BA and MFA options and is known for its rigorous training in classical ballet, contemporary dance, and choreography. The opportunities to perform in renowned works like Stars and Stripes and Celts make this program a standout for aspiring dancers.
2. Alabama State University
Alabama State University is an HBCU that offers a comprehensive dance program with a focus on both modern and African dance traditions. The program emphasizes performance and technique, preparing students for diverse careers in dance.
3. The Ailey School/Fordham University
